Sonnets are like
no other form of verse. Writing sonnets makes me
change my whole approach to poetry My pomes aren't
usually obscure, but when I write sonnets, they
begin to get that way. I'm with John Donne on this,
I guess - he was a metaphysical poet who wrote
about similar things to me, but he was way more
obscure in how he went about it. Perhaps that's
because he wrote lots of sonnets. As King Jame the
Sixth of Scotland and First of England said about
him :
"Dr Donne's verse
is like the Peace of God that passeth all
understanding"
My own sonnets
aren't quite that bad, but they're beginning to go
in that direction, unlike the rest of my work which
is much more up-front...
